Playboy seeks models of surfer type

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Many a "surf girl" would rather wipe out than pose for a Playboy pic, but Tia Carrere ("Lilo & Stitch") is a role model of the opposite persuasion. So if you're a female surfer with a smile (and fine bod) for the camera, Playboy is looking for you.

You don't have to be a ranked pro, but Playboy seeks women who know their way around a wave. If you know a tanker from a twinzer and can tell a macker from a point break, you're halfway there.

Candidates should send a recent full-figure photo in a two-piece swimsuit and a head-and-shoulders portrait to Playboy's Studio West: Surf Women Pictorial, 2112 Broadway, Santa Monica, CA 90404.

Candidates must be at least 18 years old. A clear copy of a photo ID that shows date of birth must be included with photos. Photos must be received by Sept. 14; all submissions are confidential. Polaroids, snapshots, color slides and digital images will be accepted. Photos become the property of Playboy and cannot be returned.

Surf water polo is making a return to Waikiki this weekend as part of the three-day Duke's Ho'olaule'a honoring surfing legend Duke Kahanamoku. The surf water polo takes place off Kuhio Beach. There's also a Waterman challenge — a swimming, paddle boarding, and canoe showdown between Honolulu City and County lifeguards and a team from Los Angeles. On land, there will be historical walking tours of Waikiki and Brunch on the Beach in his honor on Sunday.

A full-blooded Hawaiian, Duke represented the United States in four Summer Olympic Games between 1912 and 1932, winning three gold and two silver medals in swimming, with a bronze medal in water polo.

Proceeds raised from Duke's Ho'olaule'a will go toward scholarships given by the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation. For details about the weekend events or the foundation, visit www.dukefoundation.org.

Bookstore offers Chamberlain signing

So far, the only opportunity for in-person face time with actor and author Richard Chamberlain is a signing for his memoir, "Shattered Love," from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. tomorrow at Bestsellers, Bishop Square, downtown. Chamberlain, 69, is back in Hawai'i from a Mainland book tour and appearances earlier in the summer in "The Stillborn Lover," a Thomas Findley play, at the Berkshire Theatre Festival.

The book was a short sensation nationwide because of the romantic hero's acknowledgement of his sexual orientation (he's gay). But it is also a soul-baring exploration of his upbringing in an alcoholic home, his discomfort with the trappings of fame and his spiritual journey.
