Lahaina project loan guaranteed

A planned family entertainment park in Lahaina has obtained a $5 million guaranteed loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture rural development program, according to U.S. Rep Ed Case.

Maui restaurateur Jerome E. Metcalfe intends to build an $8 million restaurant and miniature golf course and amusement center at the Lahaina Business Park, including batting cages, water sports, a rock-climbing wall and specialty shops. Metcalfe is the owner of the Rusty Harpoon in Ka'anapali and the Kahului Ale House.

The proposed park will include a 12,000-square-foot Lahaina Ale House Restaurant. Case said the Lahaina park will create 34 jobs.


Kaua'i gets Drug Court

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — The state judiciary has established a Drug Court on Kaua'i, expanding a program already in operation in Hilo and Kona and on Maui and O'ahu.

The 5th Circuit Drug Court is a minimum 12-month, treatment-based program for 20 offenders who can avoid jail by participating in strict drug testing, counseling and 12-step rehabilitation meetings. Adults charged with felony drug offenses can be eligible for the program if they have no extensive criminal record and no convictions for sexual offenses or assault. The county prosecutor's office must approve applications.

The Kaua'i Drug Court coordinator is Alton Amimoto.

New city law limits vending

Mayor Jeremy Harris yesterday signed into law a measure that bans unlicensed vendors from Kekaulike Mall, The College Walk and Sun Yat Sen Mall. However, Chinatown merchants will be able to sell goods on specified portions of a sidewalk or mall abutting their stores. Offenders face a citation and/or arrest and fines up to $1,000 and/or 30 days in jail. The measure also bans unlicensed peddling in city parks and beaches and on the sidewalks around Honolulu Hale and the Municipal Building.

Kapa'a cleanup needs helpers

The call is out for volunteers in a cleanup on Kapa'a Quarry Road outside Kailua from 7:30 a.m. to noon Aug. 30. The effort includes free lunch and a chance to win a pupu party at Pinky's Pupu Bar & Grill.
