Hilo surges to 3-0 at Ripken series

Jaycen-Cann Ferriera had four hits and three RBIs, and three teammates teamed on a four-inning three-hitter as Hilo punished Keene, N.H., 15-0, yesterday at the Cal Ripken Majors (ages 11-12) World Series in Aberdeen, Md.

Aisha Sueda, Jordan Demattos and Mason Garcia each gave up a single in the game shortened by a mercy rule.

Sueda had two hits and two RBIs, Garcia had two hits and three RBIs and Jeremy Crivello had two hits and two RBIs to help pace Hilo's 14-hit offense.

Hilo, which improved to 3-0, plays its final game of pool play today against Upper Montgomery, Md., which is 2-1.

FISHING

Pajaro keeps lead: Jim Ramsey's tag-and-release catch of a blue marlin yesterday helped California's Pajaro Valley Gamefish Club retain its lead in the 44th Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament in waters off Honokohau on the Big Island.

Pajaro has 966 points, thanks in large part to a 516-pound marlin caught by Rocky Franich late Tuesday.

Tournament Anglers of the Big Island is in second place with 700 points, followed by Newport Beach of Japan (650), King Harbor Marlin Club of Southern California and Hilo Yacht Club (both with 600) and Port Hacking Game Fishing Club of Australia (524).

True Blue Fishing Club of Japan leads the ahi division with 207 points. Hilo Yacht Club is in second with 177 points.

GOLF

McLachlin wins opener: Honolulu's Parker McLachlin defeated Greg Reynolds of Grand Blanc, Mich., 3 and 2, yesterday to advance to the second round of match play at the U.S. Amateur Golf Championship at Oakmont, Pa.

McLachlin never trailed after winning the first hole with par. He was 2 up after nine holes and closed out the match with a par on the 231-yard par-3 16th hole.

McLachlin will play Patrick Carter of Huntington, W.Va., this morning at the Oakmont Country Club course. The winners advance to the afternoon's third round.

Quarterfinals will be held tomorrow, the semifinals Saturday and the 36-hole final Sunday.

FOOTBALL

Islanders honor players: Nian Taylor, Eddie Klaneski and Josh White earned individual honors at the Hawaiian Islanders banquet last night.

Taylor was named the Offensive Player of the Year after leading the team with 73 receptions, 1,133 yards and 29 touchdowns.

Klaneski was the unanimous choice for Defensive Player of the Year. He recorded team highs in total tackles with 57 solo tackles and 36 assists for a total of 75.

White received Ironman (two-way) player honors. He was the team's leading rusher with 63 carries for 302 yards and 14 touchdowns, and led the team with four forced fumbles and ranked at or near the top of every major defensive category.

The community service award went to offensive/defensive lineman Andy Ramos. Staff award winners included Cristy Tamanaha for most improved, Angie Yoon for most inspirational and Thomas Yoshida for employee of the year.
