McCubbin a finalist for high-level UH post

Hamilton McCubbin, who resigned abruptly three months ago as chief executive officer of Kamehameha Schools, is one of four finalists for the top academic position at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa campus, vice chancellor of academic affairs, according to UH spokesman Jim Manke.

McCubbin is the only candidate from Hawai'i on a list prepared by a 17-member search committee of representatives from the faculty, students and the community at large.

If chosen he would be second in command to chancellor Peter Englert.

The committee was chaired by Michael Forman, associate professor of linguistics, and included former first lady Vicky Cayetano.

The campus will announce later today a line-up of appearances by the four candidates and the community is invited to "get to know them," said Manke. Manke said Englert will invite comments from the community, on and off campus, before he makes a final decision.

"Not all the committee members voted the same way," said Forman of McCubbin, "but he made it into the final set by vote of the committee."

In the wake of McCubbin’s resignation from Kamehameha, questions were raised about a sexual harassment complaint against him from an assistant professor he supervised at the University of Wisconsin in the late 1990s. After an investigation the university said McCubbin had broken no rules.

The other finalists are: Liahna Armstrong, dean of the College of Arts and Humanities at Central Washington University and a professor of English; Christina Gonzalez, senior advisor to the chancellor of the University of California-Davis and a professor of Spanish; Neal Smatresk, dean of the College of Science at the University of Texas at Arlington.
