9 Hawai'i teams in tennis nationals

U.S.D.A. Select rallied at last weekend's USA League Tennis Hawai'i Pacific Section Championships to become the first Kaua'i men's team to qualify for nationals.

The team, captained by Calvin Lalin, overcame big deficits in the tiebreakers of the last two matches to defeat O'ahu, 3-2, in the final on Maui.

U.S.D.A. was one of nine Hawai'i teams to advance to nationals. More than 600 players on 60 teams competed at the championships.

Players are grouped into six ability levels, from beginner (2.5) to advanced (5.0), based on the National Tennis Rating Program. The outcome is based on team scores.
