The Hawaiian Humane Society has been able to confirm that four of the 14 dogs that were under the care of a Hawai'i Kai woman accused of animal abuse have been sold and are in good condition.
Spokeswoman Eve Holt said the Humane Society will attempt to locate the 10 other dogs and verify that they also have new owners and are in good living conditions. Information on the remaining dogs is to be provided to the Humane Society by the attorney for Lucy Kagan by Sept. 2.
KAGAN
On May 7, 27 dogs and cats were removed from Kagan's Hawai'i Kai condominium after a fire was reported. An animal-cruelty case was opened after firefighters and police found the animals in crowded and unsanitary conditions.
Thirteen animals were turned over to their owners and 14 dogs were later returned to Kagan. Kagan has claimed that she has since sold 10 dogs and placed four in "foster care."
Holt said that Circuit Judge Eden Hifo yesterday gave the society until Sept. 2 to find the remaining dogs based on information from Kagan.
If the Humane Society is unable to reach the alleged buyers, Holt said, subpoenas could be issued to force these people to show up in court.
"What we're trying to do is to confirm that the dogs have actually been sold to new owners who will provide them with good homes," Holt said.
At a hearing Aug. 18, Hifo ordered that people who received the animals in "foster care" allow the Humane Society and a veterinarian to inspect the animals and their living conditions. Holt said earlier this week that three inspections revealed no major problems.
