Kailua runs over Punahou, 22-7

By Wes Nakama

University of Hawai'i offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh may want to keep his pipeline to Kailua High School intact.

Kailua, which has sent four offensive linemen to scholarships at UH in the past two years, unveiled its latest standout group last night in a 22-7 nonleague victory over visiting Punahou. This Surfriders line looked as good as any in the past, helping junior running back Kekoa Sua rush for 288 yards on 25 carries, including touchdown runs of 84, 83 and 14 yards.

"It seemed like he had 500," Punahou coach Kale Ane said. "He's very good, a great runner in the open field. Their line drove into us and he did the rest. Their line is big and strong, and they controlled the ball. They did a good job."

Punahou (0-1) did a good job early on, intercepting two passes in the first quarter and jumping out to a 7-0 lead after an 87-yard pass play from quarterback John Morris to tailback Micah Strickland.

But Kailua (1-0) answered with Sua's 84-yard touchdown run on a third-and-2 play in which he broke several tackles before racing down the middle of the field.

Mike Sakaba's extra point made it 7-7 with 8:10 remaining in the half.

Sakaba added a 37-yard field goal with 11 seconds left to give the Surfriders a 10-7 lead at intermission.

Sua finished the half with 172 yards on 16 carries. He put Kailua up 16-7 with 13 seconds remaining in the third quarter on an 84-yard run down the left sideline, again after breaking several tackles.

The extra-point attempt failed, but Sua scored again with 9:09 left in the game on a 14-yard run after shooting through the left side of the line.

"Kekoa is big (5-feet-10, 185 pounds) and strong and he runs smooth," Kailua coach Darren Johnson said.

The two-point conversion attempt failed, but the Surfriders got interceptions from Lauton Atisanoe and Michael Kealoha to foil a Buffanblu comeback attempt.

"This was a good test for us," Johnson said. "Punahou is a good football team, and it's nice to win."

Johnson was especially pleased with his offensive line — Ko'o Kamalamalama, Ryan Rodrigues, Mike Keohohina, Jaymes Asosaoletoetu, Kainoa LaCount, Kea Crowell, JD Puli and George Salakielu.

"Our coaches (Marcus Malepeai and Kimo Grieg) do an extraordinary job with them," Johnson said. "We produce linemen out of this place, and it's a pride thing. We expect them to play well."
