Broncos trade punter McBriar to Seahawks

Associated Press

DENVER — The Denver Broncos traded punter Mat McBriar to the Seattle Seahawks yesterday for a conditional draft pick in 2004.

McBriar, a University of Hawai'i alum, signed with the Broncos as a rookie free agent on April 28. He appeared in one preseason game, averaging 40.4 yards on seven punts against Houston on Aug. 9.

McBriar was brought in to compete with incumbent Micah Knorr, but his inability to handle kickoffs or hold on place kicks hurt his chances of making the team.

McBriar said he was surprised but welcomes a move to the West Coast.

"It's closer to home," said McBriar, who was raised in Australia, "and closer to Hawai'i. The one thing I really miss is the ocean. I can't handle being anywhere without salt water."
