Pajaro Valley wins billfish tourney

Pajaro Valley Game Fish Club of Watsonville, Calif., didn't catch any fish on the final day of the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament yesterday, but captured its third championship since 1997 at Honokohau, Hawai'i.

Pajaro Valley scored 1,774 points in the five-day event. It also won the tournament in 1997 and 2001. Tournament Anglers of the Big Island finished second with 1,400 points.

Pajaro captain Rocky Franich landed the biggest catch of the tournament on Tuesday — a 516-pound blue marlin, and Jim Ramsey caught marlin on Wednesday and Thursday.

Ramsey's second marlin was weighed at 508. Other members of the team were Mike McElroy, Arlen Steiner and Joe Yee.

For the week, 42 fish were tagged and released and 31 were hooked but lost. Three large marlin were boated and brought in for weighing.

Marlin Parker was the top skipper with 1,490 points. The winner of the ahi division was True Blue Fishing Club of Japan. Hilo Yacht Club was second.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Ex-UH players in tournament: The O'ahu Volleyball Association and AVPNext Players Championships is today and tomorrow at Queen's Surf Beach Sand Box.

The field is expected to include former University of Hawai'i volleyball players Tony Ching, Costas Theocharidis, Eyal Zimet, Curt Vaughan and Troy Hotz.

Players will compete in men's and women's open division doubles. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and play begins at 8:30 a.m. in the double-elimination tournament. Pool play and quarterfinal matches will be played today, and the semifinal and championship matches are tomorrow.

TRACK AND FIELD

Two from UH All-Academic: University of Hawai'i track and field members Victoria Chang and Hanna Bremler were named to the NCAA Division I All-Academic Team, and helped the squad earn All-Academic Women's Team honors for the first time.

Chang, a junior from Honolulu, had a 3.76 grade point average, and Bremler, a freshman from Tyreso, Sweden, posted a 3.61 GPA.

The Rainbow Wahine's GPA average was 3.20, placing it in a tie for 27th nationally. Bradley University led Division I with a 3.46 GPA.

SAILING

UH women No. 1: The University of Hawai'i women's sailing team is ranked No. 1 in the Sailing World College Preseason Rankings.

Yale is ranked No. 2 and Tufts No. 3.

UH also is ranked third in the coed sailing poll. Harvard is ranked No.1, followed by Hobart/William Smith.

The Rainbow Wahine open their season Sept. 27 and 28 at the Women's Intersectional at Stanford, Calif. The coed team opens at the Single-handed Pacific Coast Championships, Oct. 3 to 5.
