The Hawai'i High School Athletic Association will award 35 state team championships at 25 events this school year, beginning with air riflery on Nov. 4 and ending with judo on May 22.

Of the 35 state team championships, 32 are recognized by the National Federation of State High School Associations, more than any other state in the nation.

Massachusetts and New Jersey are next with 31 while New Hampshire and New York each sponsor 30.

"We are very pleased and proud that Hawai'i, one of the smallest states, is able to offer opportunities for state-level competition in more sports than much bigger states — in fact, more than any other state," HHSAA executive director Keith Amemiya said.

Hawai'i is the only state to sponsor championships in judo and canoe paddling, and one of two to sponsor championships in girls wrestling, riflery and girls water polo.

There are 18 state championships for girls, 16 for boys and one (canoe paddling) for mixed teams.
