Two Hawai'i surfers third in South Africa

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i surfers Ola Eleogram and Tory Titcomb placed third in their respective divisions of the inaugural Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships yesterday at North Beach, Durban, South Africa.

Eleogram placed third in the boys under 18 division; Titcomb was third in the girls under 19 division.

They were the only Hawai'i surfers to advance to the finals of the week-long competition.

Another Hawai'i surfer, Clay Marzo, was eliminated in the boys under 16 semifinals.

Division champions were South Africa's Jordan Smith (boys under 16), and Australians Ben Dunn (boys under 18) and Jesse Miley-Dyer (girls under 19).

The contest featured more than 200 teen-aged surfers representing 17 countries.

Glenn Williams, father of San Francisco Giants pitcher Jerome Williams, will accept the Quarterback Club's award for the Sportsperson of the Month for July for his son.

The club's luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. and the meeting begins at noon.
