Two Hawai'i surfers third in South Africa

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i surfers Ola Eleogram and Tory Titcomb placed third in their respective divisions of the inaugural Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships yesterday at North Beach, Durban, South Africa.

Eleogram placed third in the boys under 18 division; Titcomb was third in the girls under 19 division.

They were the only Hawai'i surfers to advance to the finals of the week-long competition.

Another Hawai'i surfer, Clay Marzo, was eliminated in the boys under 16 semifinals.

Division champions were South Africa's Jordan Smith (boys under 16), and Australians Ben Dunn (boys under 18) and Jesse Miley-Dyer (girls under 19).

The contest featured more than 200 teen-aged surfers representing 17 countries.

Quarterback Club: Charlie Wade, associate coach for the University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team, is scheduled to speak at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club at the Pagoda Hotel Ballroom.

Other speakers include John Fink, president and general manager of K5 and News8, and Richard Townsend, Leilehua High School principal and football coordinator for the O'ahu Interscholastic Association.

Glenn Williams, father of San Francisco Giants pitcher Jerome Williams, will accept the Quarterback Club's award for the Sportsperson of the Month for July for his son.

The club's luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. and the meeting begins at noon.

Evans race on Sept. 7: The Dick Evans Memorial Bike race — a 112-mile race around O'ahu — will be Sept. 7.

Deadline to register by mail is Sept. 3, and on-line registration deadline is midnight Sept. 5. Fee is $50. Participants can register in person on Sept. 6 at The Bike Shop, with a late fee of $65.

Evans, an accomplished cyclist, died in 1982 in a collision with a tractor-trailer while riding his bike near Beretania and 'A'ala streets.
