'Ice' meeting to be held Sept. 3

A town hall meeting to discuss the epidemic use of crystal methamphetamine, or 'ice,' will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 3 in the Farrington High School auditorium.

U.S. Attorney Ed Kubo, City Prosecutor Peter Carlisle, police representatives and Mason Henderson of the Sand Island Treatment Center will attend the event to discuss the drug and how to stop its spread in Hawai'i.

The Kalihi meeting is sponsored by Sen. Donna Mercado Kim, former City Councilman Mufi Hannemann and the New Hope Christian Fellowship. For more information, call 587-7200.

Water-quality projects sought

The Department of Health Clean Water Branch is looking to help finance projects that will protect and improve the quality of Hawai'i's water resources through the prevention and reduction of nonpoint source pollution.

Matching grants up to $200,000 are available to selected individuals or groups. Nonpoint source pollution occurs when rainwater moves over yards, streets, playgrounds, parks and parking lots, picking up rubbish, nutrients and animal waste and carrying it to storm drains, streams and oceans.

Request For Proposal forms can be obtained at the Clean Water Branch at 919 Ala Moana, Room 301, Honolulu, HI 96814 or by calling 586-4309. Information on proposals is available online.

Pouhala Marsh cleanup slated

The Hawai'i Nature Center needs volunteers to help clean up and restore Pouhala Marsh in Waipahu. The marsh, which is the largest of the remaining wetland habits in Pearl Harbor, will be used as a new wetland program site for the Nature Center. The marsh is of great importance to the endangered Hawaiian stilt.

The service project is Sunday morning from 8:30 to 11:30. The work will be hot, wet and muddy. Volunteers need to bring their own work gloves, wear long trousers and shoes that they don't mind getting muddy.

Call Pauline Kawamata at 955-0100, Ext. 18.
