Hit-and-run suspect freed

A 46-year-old man arrested Sunday on suspicion of being the driver of a van involved in a hit-and-run accident Saturday at Kapahulu Avenue and Date Street has been released pending further investigation. The man has no permanent address.

A 6-year-old boy and two women, ages 29 and 70, were injured while crossing the street.

Safety official appointed

John Souza, a retired 27-year Honolulu Police Department veteran and former chairman of the State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers O'ahu chapter board, is the new administrator of the state Department of Public Safety’s Special Services Division.

Souza, 54, was appointed to the position by Gov. Linda Lingle. He officially assumed his duties of overseeing the operations performed by state deputy sheriffs on Aug. 18.

Standoff ends in man’s arrest

Police yesterday arrested a 39-year-old Waipahu man on suspicion of punching his wife in the face and then firing several shots in the air from a semi-automatic pistol in the back yard of his Kahuanani Street home. First-degree reckless endangering and abuse of a household member charges are pending against the man.

The man was involved in a brief standoff with police but surrendered at 7:55 p.m.

Arrest leads to burglary charge

Authorities yesterday charged Jason George Westbrook, 20, with first-degree burglary. Westbrook, who has no local address, was arrested by police responding to a Sunday complaint that the lights of a Pearl City home were on despite the homeowners being away.

Police found Westbrook hiding in a bathroom inside the house at 9 p.m. Bail for Werstbrook is $15,000.

Hau'ula man faces charges

Authorities have charged a 28-year-old Hau'ula man who they said broke a beer bottle on the head of a tourist on Aug. 16 at Sunset Beach.

Aaron Togiai is charged with second-degree assault and his bail is $15,000.

The male visitor from Italy was treated for cuts to his head and neck at Kahuku Hospital. Police said the visitor was biking to Kahuku between 9:30 and 10 p.m. when he stopped at Sunset Beach to ask a group of people for directions. The victim, who speaks little English, was offered a beer and briefly joined the group.

For no apparent reason, Togiai allegedly hit the man on the head with a beer bottle. Windward District crime reduction unit officers identified and arrested Togiai last week.
