Safety official appointed

John Souza, a retired 27-year Honolulu Police Department veteran and former chairman of the State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers O'ahu chapter board, is the new administrator of the state Department of Public Safety's Special Services Division.

Souza, 54, was appointed to the position by Gov. Linda Lingle. He officially assumed his duties of overseeing the operations performed by state deputy sheriffs on Aug. 18.

'Cop on Top' fund-raiser set

Off-duty police officers and sheriffs will spend three days and nights on top of Safeway stores starting at 6 a.m. Thursday to raise money for Special Olympics Hawai'i. Law enforcement officers will be atop Safeways on Beretania Street in Honolulu, Waimalu, Kailua, Kane'ohe, Hawai'i Kai and Kihei, Maui. The officers will remain on top — rain or shine — for three consecutive days and nights or until $10,000 in donations is collected at each site.

Volunteers will accept donations on the ground; $20 donors will receive a free "Cop on Top" T-shirt, $10 donors a supporter decal and all $5 donors will be entered in a drawing for free groceries. Safeway will also donate 12 cents for every dozen of glazed doughnuts sold.

The event is part of the Troy Barboza Law Enforcement Torch Run.

Bone marrow donors sought

Volunteers are being sought for the St. Francis Medical Center Hawai'i Bone Marrow Donor Registry from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday during the Okinawan Festival at Kapi'olani Park. The Hawai'i United Okinawan Association is helping with the drive. Donors must be between 18 and 60 years old and in good health. A sample of blood is collected from the donor for tissue typing, which is placed on the national registry at no cost to the donor. For more information, call 547-6154.
