Beat bus-strike blues by walking or cycling
| City handcuffs itself in bus strike dilemma |
Not to make light of the bus strike's enormous disruption to many O'ahu residents, but for those able-bodied folks who live within a mile or two of work or school, we suggest using this hiatus from public transit to rediscover the therapeutic joys of walking and bicycling.
A couple of years ago, a panel of Hawai'i fitness experts rated walking as the best outdoor activity because it burns calories, promotes circulation, strengthens the heart and is easy on the joints.
Walking is easier on the joints than jogging and requires only a decent pair of shoes with good arch support.
Oftentimes, it can take the same amount of time to bicycle to work as it does to drive. But just be careful. Honolulu isn't the most bike-friendly city, so wear a helmet and watch out for inattentive drivers, potholes and other hazards.
It's true that after a hard day's slog, exercise might seem like just another chore. But you'd be surprised how refreshed you will feel when you get home.
Why, it might even become a habit.
