UH's Devitt suspended for opener

Arlene Devitt, a three-time All-Western Athletic Conference soccer forward, will sit out of Friday's season-opener against No. 11 Arizona State for disciplinary reasons, coach Pinsoom Tenzing said yesterday.

Tenzing said he suspended Devitt for an on-field fight with a teammate on Thursday and for lack of conditioning.

Hawai'i opens its season Friday in the 'Ohana Hotels and Resorts No Ka 'Oi tournament at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The three-team tournament also includes Bowling Green.

Tenzing called Devitt's suspension a "huge" loss for the team, but added that "discipline is important" and that "conditioning is still an issue" with his star forward.

No one was injured during Thursday's fight at the UH practice field and the other player involved in the fight was not suspended, Tenzing said. Tenzing said Devitt's chances of playing in Sunday's Bowling Green game were "good, real good."

"The best 11 players are out there and I support my team no matter what," Devitt said yesterday. "Even from the bench."

Devitt is one of two seniors on the Hawai'i team and holds several school career records including points (74), goals (29), assists (16) and shots (186).

Hawai'i is expected to challenge for the WAC title this season. The Rainbow Wahine were picked to finish second in a preseason poll by conference coaches.
