Jewelry stolen from Hilo kiosk

HILO, Hawai'i — Police are investigating the theft of more than $12,000 in jewelry from a kiosk at the Prince Kuhio Plaza shopping center in Hilo last weekend.

Patrol officers said someone broke into the kiosk at Hilo's retailing hub sometime between 7 p.m. Saturday and 10:15 a.m. Sunday.

Stolen items included 100 sterling-silver neck chains; eight silver bracelets with gold quilt and honu designs; and six silver bracelets with dragon, phoenix and peacock designs.

Maui suspect still in hospital

KIHEI, Maui — A suspect in a sword attack who was shot by police Tuesday remained at Maui Memorial Medical Center yesterday.

Police said the 30-year-old homeless man suffered a gunshot wound to his right hip after he refused to put down the samurai sword and lunged at a police officer. Hospital officials would not describe his condition.

The man allegedly waved the sword in the Longs Drug Store in Kihei around 10:25 a.m. Tuesday, then attacked a 28-year-old Kihei man outside. He was treated at the Kaiser Clinic in Kihei for a cut on the side of the head.

The suspect faces attempted murder and other charges, police said.


Two men indicted in bank holdups

Two men have been indicted by a federal grand jury in connection with three bank robberies on O'ahu this summer. Blaine L. Teves is accused of robbing City Bank on June 4 and American Savings Bank on June 13. Aubrey Tee is accused of robbing Bank of Hawaii on Aug. 18.
