Carvalho carries Kahuku

Advertiser Staff

The Kahuku Red Raiders rode the arm and legs of Waika Carvalho en route to a 36-0 victory over Wai'anae before 3,143 fans at Aloha Stadium last night.

The senior quarterback played a part in four of Kahuku's six scores in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association football opener for both teams.

Carvalho completed 8 of his 18 pass attempts for 221 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for a pair of touchdowns.

Carvalho's favorite target was Spencer Hafoka.

The junior receiver hauled five passes for 184 yards and a touchdown.

Kahuku rushed 39 times for 244 yards and amassed 480 total yards while holding Wai'anae to 33 rushing yards on 21 attempts and 99 total yards.

Kahuku coach Siuaki Livai rested his starters in the fourth quarter.

Reserve running back Darren Magalogo scored on a 34-yard touchdown run with 7:13 left in the fourth quarter and put the 35-point mercy rule into effect.

Under the mercy rule, the clock stops only for a timeout or injury.

Kahuku, state champion in 2000 and 2001, defeated Lahainaluna, 34-0, in a non-league game last week. The Seariders, the OIA West co-champions who have won 15 OIA titles since 1970, are winless this season after falling to Kapolei, 21-0, in a preseason game last week.
