Top-ranked BYUH falls at California tournament

Brigham Young-Hawai'i, top-ranked in NCAA Division II women's volleyball, fell to No. 3 Cal State-San Bernardino in straight games at the Coyote Classic yesterday in San Bernardino, Calif., 30-28, 30-24, 30-26.

Chun Yi Lin, Yu Chuan Weng and Mariah Goselin had 11 kills each, but the Seasiders were outblocked 14-5.

BYU-Hawai'i defeated Cal State Bakersfield, 32-30, 32-30, 30-26, earlier in the day.

UH-Hilo coach wins in debut: Tiffanie Ollison recorded 20 kills, Sara Pilgreen 16 and Cori Sutter 13 as Hawai'i-Hilo won its first match under new head coach Julie Morgan, defeating Northwest Nazarene (Idaho), 23-30, 30-24, 30-25, 31-29, yesterday in the Hawaiian Style Classic at UHH Gymnasium.

Pilgreen had 20 digs and Kahealani Silva added 13 for the Vulcans.

Hilo was defeated by Southwest Minnesota, 30-20, 30-21, 20-30, 30-23, in its second match.

Hawai'i Pacific opens season 2-0: Nadica Karleusa had a match-high 30 kills as Hawai'i Pacific, ranked 22nd in NCAA Division II, defeated Northern Colorado, 30-27, 30-21, 27-30, 17-30, 15-9, in the Hawaiian Style Classic yesterday at UHH Gymnasium.

Flavia Brakling and Barbara Martin added 17 and 11 kills, respectively, for HPU.

Maggie Ledall led Northern Colorado (1-1) with 20 kills.

In the first match, Brakling pounded 17 kills to lead two teammates in double figures as Hawai'i Pacific beat Seattle University (Wash.), 28-30, 31-29, 30-21, 30-27.

The Sea Warriors hit .299 for the match and held the Redhawks to .255.

Chaminade wins season-opener: Kahala Kabalis pounded a match-high 24 kills and Valasi Sepulona added 15 as Chaminade opened its women's volleyball season Thursday with a 26-30, 30-19, 30-26, 30-20 non-conference win over Cal State-Dominguez Hills at Carson, Calif.

GOLF

Tomori fades: Hilo's Christel Tomori shot an 80 in the final round of the Venice (Fla.) LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament yesterday and failed to advance.

The top 30, led by medalists Kelly Lagedrost, Seol-An Jeon and 17-year-old Aree Song, move on to the final stage of qualifying.

The medalists shot 4-under-par 284. Tomori's four-day total was 301, good for 55th. Former University of Hawai'i golfer Denise Philbrick (76-300) also failed to advance.

The second LPGA Tour Sectional Qualifying Tournament is Sept. 17-20 at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif., site of the Kraft Nabisco Championship.

The LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament will be at the LPGA International course in Daytona Beach, Fla., Oct. 21-24.

BOXING

Pair advance to semifinals: Kawika Tangjian and Boston Salmon, both of Wai'anae, advanced to the semifinals of the Ringside 2003 National Labor Day Tournament, one of the largest amateur boxing tournaments in the world, yesterday in Kansas City, Mo.

Tangjian beat Gilbert Clark of Grand Rapids, Mich., on a 3-0 judges' decision, in the second round of the 95-pound, ages 13-14 division. He faces Johnny Parker of St. Louis today.

Salmon beat Adam Adrian of Clio, Mich., on a 3-0 judges' decision, in the second round of the 86-pound, ages 11-12 division. He faces Michael Espino of New Jersey today.
