HPU goes 4-0 in Hilo tourney

Hawai'i Pacific's women's volleyball team won two matches yesterday to finish 4-0 in the season-opening Hawaiian Style Classic Tournament at Hilo yesterday.

Nadica Karleusa, a sophomore from Belgrade, Yugoslavia, had 18 kills in Hawai'i Pacific's 30-14, 30-21, 30-19 victory over Northwest Nazarene of Idaho.

Karleusa and Flavia Brakling of Sao Paulo, Brazil, each had 13 kills in a 30-16, 30-19, 30-23 victory over Southwest Minnesota.

In an earlier match, Northern Colorado defeated host UH-Hilo, 27-30, 30-20, 30-19, 30-24 Sara Pilgreen led UH-Hilo with 16 kills.

Seattle University defeated the Vulcans (1-3), 30-23, 31-29, 25-30, 27-30, 17-15, in a late match.

BYUH splits: Brigham Young-Hawai'i, which lost just two games during its Division II championship season last year, lost its second of the current season yesterday, falling to UC San Diego at the Coyote Classic in San Bernardino, Calif.

The sixth-ranked Tritons defeated the Seasiders (2-2), 30-17, 30-28, 30-28.

In an earlier game yesterday, BYUH, ranked No. 1 in the Division II preseason poll, rallied from a first-game loss to defeat Sonoma State, 28-30, 30-26, 30-26, 30-14.

Ashley Moeai, a senior from Porterville, Calif., led BYUH with 20 kills against Sonoma State.

Chaminade splits: Cal State Los Angeles defeated Chaminade 30-20, 30-18, 29-31, 30-25, despite a match-high 21 kills from the Silverswords' Kahala Kabalis at the Cal Poly Pomona (Calif.) Invitational.

The Silverswords finished 2-2 in the tournament and are 3-2 overall.

Earlier yesterday, Kabalis, a junior from Hilo, had 21 kills to lead Chaminade to a 30-26, 30-24, 30-28 victory over Alaska-Fairbanks.



BOXING

Three from Hawai'i in finals: Three Hawai'i youth boxers advanced to the finals of the Ringside 2003 National Labor Day Boxing Tournament in Kansas City, Mo.

Boston Salmon of Wai'anae beat Michael Espino in a 3-0 decision in the 86-pound, ages 11-12 division. He faces Jacob Williams of Nilburn, Ga., today.

Kawika Tangjian of Wai'anae earned a 3-0 decision over Johnny Parker of St. Louis, Mo., in the 95-pound, ages 13-14 division. He faces Jermell Charlo of Houston today.

Gina Ramos of Kaka'ako is also in the finals after drawing a bye in the 95-pound, ages 13-14 division. She faces Carolina Ruiz of Linwood, Calif., today.

Approximately 1,500 boxers are entered in the tournament.
