Build Worldwide

Jason Baffa's "Singlefin: Yellow," a 2003 surfing film, will receive its Hawai'i premiere as part of a seven-day "Classic Surf Series" Friday through Dec. 11 at The Art House at Restaurant Row.

"Singlefin" cast and crew will attend a premiere party, from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday at Indigo Eurasian Cuisine, where music will be provided by Resophonics, a local band led by Buck Giles on Hawaiian steel guitar; White Buffalo, from Huntington Beach, featured on the "Shelter," "Hallowed Ground" and "Earth to Meekus" soundtracks; and Daize Shayne, local longboard surfer-musician, featured in "Singlefin." Admission is $7 (must be 21 or older).

The film, shot in 16 mm in California, Australia, Mexico and Japan, also features longboarders Tyler Hatzikian, Beau Young, Bonga Perkins, Devon Howard and David Kinoshita.

Several Hawai'i surfers will be seen in more vintage surf features on the schedule, assembled by Cinema Paradise.

Among the revivals on the agenda:

"Big Wednesday," 1978, directed by John Milius, starring Gary Busey, Jan-Michael Vincent and William Katt. The movie is a personal epic, written by Milius, that tracks three male friends over a decade of surfing in the 1960s, exploring the beach and youth culture, with classic aerial and water footage of Sunset and Pipeline; local fave Gerry Lopez is among the surfers, and the soundtrack includes the "Three Friends Theme" music by Keola and Kapono Beamer, co-written with Basil Poledouris. Keola Beamer also did "Kaleponi Slack Key," along with other slack-key numbers, for Warner Bros.

"Fluid Drive," 1974, directed by Scott Dittrich, starring Rory Russell, Larry Bertleman, Lopez, Bill Hamilton, Peter Townend, Barry Kanaiaupuni, Ben Aipa, Eddie Aikau, Gerry Lopez and others; memorable Larry Bertleman footage, and a soundtrack including music by Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and The Beatles, helped make this a classic.

"Super Session," 1975, directed by Hal Jepsen, starring Jeff Hakman, Nat Young, Rell Sunn, Gerry Lopez, and Larry Bertleman, in locations such as Hawai'i, Australia and California. Besides surfing, a skateboarding segment showcases a young Jay Adams plus comedic Bertleman helmet-cam footage.
