15,000 gallons of sewage spill into Kawa stream

Advertiser Staff

About 15,000 gallons of wastewater overflowed from a holding tank at the Kane'ohe Preliminary Treatment Sewage Facility yesterday and spilled into Kawa Stream, city and county officials said.

The spill was detected about 2 p.m. Authorities said they brought it under control in about 10 minutes, and discovered a defective meter was to blame.

The meter normally triggers a pump when wastewater reaches a certain level in the holding tank. The pump transports the sewage to Kailua Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant for further processing.

The state Health Department was notified of the spill, city and county officials said, and warning signs were posted near Kawa Stream.
