THE LEFT LANE
Add a little Hawai'i to Christmas decor

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Koloa, Kaua'i-based Christmas ornament company Ornaments to Remember's items are quirky and whimsical, with their little red bikinis, kitschy hula girls and charming Santas sunning in a beach chair or swinging a golf club.

This year Macy's and Ornaments to Remember have paired up to create several custom designs, among them "Ono Grinds," a reminder to keiki that Santa needs sustenance on Christmas Eve.

Ornaments to Remember can be found at other gift stores, including A Gift for All Seasons, Hilo Hattie and Nohea Gallery and Island Treasures Art Gallery. Find them online at ornaments2remember.com.

Mele Macs are back for the holidays

If the Island Princess company has its way, Mele Kalikimaka would be the thing to say for its brand of holiday candy.

Found at Costco, Longs, Kmart, Daiei and at the company's factory near the airport, the Island Princess Mele Kaliki Macs (aka Mele Macs) are macadamia nuts with English toffee, chocolate and powdered sugar.

The seasonal item first appeared in 1999. Information: 839-5222, ext. 214.

Grant a wish for a needy kid or elder

The Salvation Army's Angel Trees at shopping malls are strewn with gift wishes of needy children and elderly. Drop off an unwrapped present to the same location by Dec. 16. The Salvation Army also offers its Lokahi "adopt-a-family" program.

Benefiting Catholic Charities, Senior Giving Trees are decorated with ornaments labeled with a gift that a disadvantaged senior needs. They're often items such as toiletries, bags of rice, towels and blankets. There are also family trees. The items can be dropped off by Dec. 19. Trees are at Victoria Ward locations and St. Philomena Church in Salt Lake.

Information: 521-4357 (Catholic Charities) or 988-2136 (The Salvation Army Angel Tree).

Holiday gift ideas? Try a CD player or TV

Further proof that all you really need to get a book published is a talent for brainstorming and the ability to count accurately: Linda Bodger's "1,500 Great Gift Ideas."

Bodger is author and illustrator of such classics as "2001 Ways to Pamper Yourself." Her most recent book includes such "great" gift ideas as CD players, TVs and wine — all of which, by the way, are listed more than once.

We're waiting for someone to publish "1,000 Things You Can't Believe People Make Money From."
