QUICK BITES
Ice-cream makers offer special flavors

By Wanda Adams
Advertiser Food Editor

This is the time of year when ice-cream manufacturers trot out special, seasonal flavors. I have a friend who is crazy about Baskin-Robbins' peppermint ice cream, and his mom stocks up before he comes home for the holidays. Haagen-Dazs just announced the return of its Bailey's Irish Cream and also Pralines & Cream, available through January. Maui's Roselani Ice Cream will have Peppermint Candy for Christmas. Starting this week, Lappert's shops are serving their Santa Sundae, a pink peppermint ice cream swirled with fudge and chocolate-mint cookies.

Island chef tagged 'Zest Genius'

Roy Yamaguchi is featured in the December 2003 edition of Chile Pepper magazine, where he's labeled a "Zest Genius." The story, by Darryl Beeson, discusses Roy's philosophy of heat and sweet and his preferred fiery ingredients and offers some of his recipes. It's on newsstands or go to www.chilepepper.com.

Next time you're grocery shopping ...

While you're in the checkout line shopping for lavish holiday meals, give a thought to those for whom getting enough to eat is a daily concern. Snag a bright-green "Check-Out Hunger" coupon and add it to your grocery cart. There are two levels of support: one for $2.74 that, with the help of Kraft Foods Hawaii and the Hawaii Foodbank's buying power, will feed a family of four for a day; and $19.18 coupons that feed a family of four for a week. The campaign kicked off last week — with a gift to the food bank from Kraft of $5,000 — and continues through Jan. 5 at Safeway stores, Times Super Markets on O'ahu, Tamura Super Markets in Wai'anae and Wahiawa, and at Kokua Market.

Teensy trimmings adorn theme trees

Last year, a friend and I did a "kitchen tree" for The Queen's Medical Center Auxiliary's annual Festival of Trees — a miniature Christmas tree decorated with tiny food items and kitchen tools we made from polymer clay. Imagine my chagrin when I learned that My Little Secret at Ward Centre is selling those sorts of items for $3.50 this year — would have saved us hours of work!

This year I'm doing a "library tree" — the Festival of Trees is Friday through Sunday at Ward Warehouse.
