Holiday game plan can help zap stress

Advertiser Staff

Getting organized for the holidays can be stress free. Here are some tips to get you started:

• Make to-do lists, gift lists and update addresses. Keep the lists handy, and keep backups in a computer database.

• Set a budget for how much you will spend for each gift and don't waiver from it.

• Consider gift cards and edible gifts.

• Stock up on various-sized gift bags and colorful tissue paper in advance.

• Buy stocking stuffers at the dollar store.

• Set a goal to be finished by your target date.

Relive the glamour of the 1930s

It's a little-known fact that the University of Hawai'i-Manoa is reputed to have the largest academic historical costume collection in the United States. Now, with a gallery to showcase the collection in, visitors can share the wealth.

The latest exhibit to grace Miller Hall Gallery is "Glitz and Glamour," featuring a collection of 1930s bias-cut dresses, furs and hats. It captures the essence of '30s Hollywood, from Garbo to Gable.

To kick off the display, students and faculty from the fashion program host a free grand-opening party in the gallery, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. tomorrow in Room 112, Miller Hall. Attendees are encouraged to wear something reminiscent of the 1930s.

'Christmas House' on Maui opens today

The annual "Christmas House at the Hui" at Maui's Hui No'eau art co-op is among the longest-running and most eagerly awaited art events in the Islands. Held each year for the past 25 years, the event begins tonight with a sold-out fund-raising dinner, "First Choice Night," which gives patrons advance buying opportunities. It continues over nine days and five evenings offering handmade items by more than 100 artisans from around the Islands at Kaluanui, a plantation-era mansion on Baldwin Avenue in Makawao.

The sale is tomorrow through Dec. 13; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and Sunday, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Among the sponsors this year is Maui Kula Lavender (Nanea a'o Kula), which will be stocking the Christmas House with lavender products.
