Man might have fallen to death

HILO, Hawai'i — Police in South Kohala discovered the body of an elderly man at the bottom of Honokoa Gulch on Tuesday, but said it did not appear he died of foul play. He may have fallen into the gulch, police said.

Police tentatively identified the body as a 75-year-old man, but declined to release his name until his identity is confirmed.

The body was reported to police in an anonymous call at 2:18 p.m. Tuesday, and officers located it below the makai side of the Honokoa Gulch bridge on Route 270, about a mile north of Kawaihae Harbor.

Police said the man had been dead for about 24 hours. An autopsy is planned to determine the cause of death.

Body found in Puna home

HILO, Hawai'i — Police have scheduled an autopsy on an unidentified man whose body was discovered in a Puna home yesterday.

Puna police and paramedics were summoned to the Malama Street residence in the Leilani Estates subdivision at 8:06 a.m. yesterday and found the body.

Anyone with information on the man's identity or cause of death is asked to call Detective Benton Bolos of the East Hawaii Criminal Investigation Section at 961-2385 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.


Center entrance closed for fair

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — The county will close the southern 'Eiwa Street entrance to the Lihu'e Civic Center at 4:30 p.m. today until 5 p.m. Saturday for the Kaua'i Museum annual Christmas fair.

The Rice Street, Hardy Street and northern 'Eiwa Street entrances will remain open.

Lingle to head Bush campaign

Gov. Linda Lingle announced yesterday she would head President Bush's re-election campaign in Hawai'i.

Lingle, named chair of the Bush-Cheney '04 Hawai'i Leadership Team, said Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona would serve as co-chair for the state re-election campaign.

Senate Minority Leader Fred Hemmings, House Minority Leader Galen Fox, Kaua'i Mayor Bryan Baptiste and Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa will serve as honorary co-chairmen.


Board in recess for December

The Waikiki Neighborhood Board will be in recess this month.

The Neighborhood Commission incorrectly listed a meeting Dec. 9 in its monthly meeting calendar.

The board will resume with a Jan. 13 at the Waikiki Community Center, 310 Paoakalani Ave.


WINDWARD O'AHU

Crews clear Kailua rockfall

Windward showers caused several large rocks to fall on a residential street above Kailua, police reported last night.

The basketball-size rocks landed on Old Kalaniana'ole Highway near 'Aleka Place shortly after 5 p.m. No one was hurt, and no homes were damaged.

Police said the rocks were cleared from the road within an hour by city crews.


CENTRAL O'AHU

Holiday Special Olympics begin

The 2003 Special Olympics Hawai'i Holiday Classic will kick off this morning with speed skating competitions and awards presentation at the Ice Palace from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

More than 800 athletes and coaches from 65 delegations in Hawai'i also will compete in basketball, bowling and bocce competitions. These events will be held at Hickam Air Force Base and Marine Corps Base Hawai'i at Kane'ohe Bay tomorrow through Sunday.

Opening ceremonies will take place at 7:15 p.m. tomorrow at Hickam's Hangar 7 and will feature a parade of athletes and a torch-lighting ceremony.

A "victory dance" will be held Saturday evening at the Marine base.
