UH gets $3 million for climate studies

Last weekend's drenching rainstorm could come under scientific scrutiny — along with other Pacific weather conditions such as El Niño and La Niña and decadal climate shifts — under a new $3 million grant to the University of Hawai'i from the Japan Marine Science and Technology Center.

JAMSTEC is one of two Japanese agencies that have provided $23 million since 1997 to support UH climate research at the International Pacific Research Center.

"This part of the world is of great scientific significance for climate research, since the vast Pacific Ocean and Asian land mass influence world climate," said Shang-Ping Xie, professor of meteorology and IPRC co-leader of the Indo-Pacific Ocean Climate research team.

The money will pay for basic research into why climate varies and changes.

Chaminade sets graduation Dec. 15

Student speakers include Dawn Adachi, who receives her bachelor-of-arts degree with a double major in English and historical and political studies, and Dara Perreira, who will receive her master's in business administration.

ACT examination scheduled Feb. 7

The next national test date for the ACT assessment is Feb. 7 and college-bound students are urged to register by the Jan. 2 postmark deadline.

The late registration postmark deadline is Jan. 16, but that requires an additional fee.

Students can register online at www.act.org or get a registration packet from their high school guidance counselor and register by mail. The test fee is $26.

ACT scores are accepted by most colleges and universities in the nation and are considered along with other information to help determine admissions and course placement.
