Surfing greats, wave action featured in weeklong series

The Classic Surf Series of films kicks off today at The Art House at Restaurant Row. The Hawai'i premiere of "Singlefin: Yellow" will be celebrated at a party tomorrow night at Indigo Eurasian Cuisine.
If it's winter, it must be big-wave season, and the surf is high at The Art House at Restaurant Row as a one-week Classic Surf Series of films hits the screens beginning today, presented by Cinema Paradise.

There's a party, too, 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday at Indigo, celebrating the premiere of "Singlefin: Yellow." Attendees can meet the cast and crew, including Daize Shayne, Island longboard surfer/musician; and there's music by Resophonics, White Buffalo and DJ. Mark. Admission is $7; for those 21 and older.

The film schedule:

"Big Wednesday" (1978; 120 minutes, a new 35 mm print). Directed by John Milius; stars Gary Busey, Jan-Michael Vincent and William Katt. A tale of three buddies over a decade of 1960s surfing.

  • 4:15, 7 and 9:45 p.m. today; 7 p.m. Sunday; 4:15 p.m. Monday; 9:45 p.m. Tuesday; 4:15 p.m. Wednesday; 4:15, 7 and 9:45 p.m. Thursday.

"Singlefin: Yellow" (2003; 70 minutes). Hawai'i premiere; world travels of a yellow longboard. Jason Baffa, director.

  • 1:30, 4:15, 7 and 9:45 p.m. Saturday; 4:15 p.m. Sunday; 7 p.m. Tuesday; 9:45 p.m. Wednesday.

"Fluid Drive" (1974; 70 minutes). Directed by Scott Dittrich; soundtrack includes Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and the Beatles. Film focuses on 1970s surfing heroes Barry Kanaiaupuni, Ben Aipa, Eddie Aikau, Gerry Lopez and others.

  • 1:30 p.m. Sunday; 7 p.m. Monday; 4:15 p.m. Tuesday.

"Super Session" (1975; 70 minutes). Directed by Hal Jepsen. Jeff Hakman, Nat Young, Rell Sunn, Gerry Lopez, Larry Bertleman and others surf in Hawai'i, Australia and California.

  • 9:45 p.m. Sunday and Monday; 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Admission is $5.25 per screening before 6 p.m., $7.75 afterward.
