Tonight's must see

"Joan of Arcadia," 7 p.m., CBS. This excellent new series is at its best when focusing on Joan Girardi (Amber Tamblyn), the sweet teen who gets messages from God. Still, it also has cast strong talents as her parents. Now both have major problems. The dad (Joe Mantegna) is a police chief. Tonight, he's held captive by a crazed gunman. Meanwhile, the mom (Mary Steenburgen) has mixed reactions when a home test says she's pregnant.

Of note

"Hope & Faith," 8 p.m., ABC. The sisters are sent to an anger-management class.

"Miss Match," 8 p.m., NBC. As the last episode ended, Kate got a jolt: Her law firm's beautiful, big-money client (played by Dina Meyer, one of the "Birds of Prey" stars) is also Michael's ex. Tonight, the complications build.

"JAG," 8 p.m., CBS. In a rerun, Harm searches for Mac in Paraguay.

"Third Watch," 9 p.m., NBC. Bosco and Monroe wedge themselves into a dispute that involves a restaurant owner who has mob connections. Carlos finds complications while searching for a bone-marrow transplant for his daughter.
