Vice chancellor leaving UH-Hilo for job at University of New Mexico

HILO, Hawai'i — John Whittaker will leave the University of Hawai'iiHilo to take a post as director of resource management for the University of New Mexico.

Whittaker, UH-Hilo's vice chancellor for administrative affairs, will be responsible for budgeting and human resources in his new capacity, which is a systemwide position. He begins his new job next month.

Whittaker joined UH-Hilo in 1999 and oversaw UHH budgeting, physical plant operations, capital construction, auxiliary services and campus security.

"John Whittaker brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the job in areas like budgeting and facilities planning that were critical to the success of this university," said UHH Chancellor Rose Tseng.Ê"We have benefited tremendously from his contributions and wish him well in his new capacity, where I know he will continue to excel."

During Whittaker's tenure the university added the University Classroom and Marine Science Buildings, the first new major buildings on campus in 20 years.

Before joining UH-Hilo, Whittaker served in administrative positions at Roxbury Community College in Massachusetts, and the University of MassachusettsiBoston.

"My wife, Joan, and I would like to thank the UH-Hilo community for their friendship and support over the past 4 1/2 years," Whittaker said. "Our time here has been a wonderful, unforgettable experience."
