UH hosts Illinois in regional

Second-ranked University of Hawai'i will play No. 18 Illinois in a regional opener of the NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship on Friday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Illinois (26-6) defeated Louisville, 30-26, 30-26, 32-30, in the second round at Champaign, Ill., last night. The Fighting Illini are seeded 15th in the tournament; the Rainbow Wahine are seeded second.

In the other Hawai'i regional opener, seventh-seed Georgia Tech (33-3) plays 10th-seed California (25-6).

Hawai'i (34-1) advanced to the regionals on Friday with a 30-19, 30-23, 30-22 second-round victory over Brigham Young. No. 11 Georgia Tech defeated Florida A&M, 30-25, 34-22, 30-25, at Atlanta.

Last night, Melissa Vandrey had 16 kills and Rachel VanMeter added 13 for the Illini, who reached the final 16 for the first time since 1998.

At Berkeley, Calif., Mia Jerkov had 29 kills to lead No. 8 California to a 30-23, 30-23, 30-28 win in the second round. Jerkov, a junior had 30 kills in a three-game first-round victory over St. Mary's.

The winners of the regional openers will meet for a final four berth on Saturday.
