Crummy weather just typical December

By Mike Gordon

For those of you new to the Islands, and all of you old-timers who have grown accustomed to dry Decembers, the weather outside constitutes an official Hawaiian winter.

Scattered showers, partly cloudy, blustery tradewinds.

After six years of drought conditions, it takes a while to adjust, said Pete Donaldson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

"It’s not that out of the ordinary, kind of showery, tradewind weather," Donaldson said of the forecast through Monday.

Most of the rain will be at night and in the early morning, clearing up in the afternoon, Donaldson said.

"It’s not the same stuff we were getting a few days ago where we had all the flooding," he said. "It is just wet, wintertime tradewinds. No real heavy rain."

Winds tonight are expected to be 20 to 30 mph, dropping to 15 to 30 mph tomorrow through Sunday.

A weather system expected Monday night may bring slightly heavier rain, but nothing "exciting" Donaldson said.
