DeVey assists Santa Clara in playoffs

Santa Clara freshman midfielder Keith DeVey, a 2002 graduate of St. Anthony from Kula, had an assist in a 3-1 win over Michigan Saturday to propel the Broncos into the Men's NCAA College Cup.

Santa Clara will play Indiana in a semifinal match on Friday.

DeVey, who got the assist after his shot deflected off the goalkeeper and was put away by Kelechi Igwe in the 81st minute, made his eighth start after sitting out the latter half of the season because of a leg injury.

Midfielder Chad Imhoff-Sils (Kamehameha '03 of 'Aiea) is redshirting this year.

• Creighton junior goalkeeper Andrew Brown (Mililani '00 of Mililani) had three saves in a 3-2 loss to St. John's in the Elite Eight of the Men's NCAA Tournament Sunday.

• Massachusetts freshman midfielder Richard Higa (Mid-Pacific '03 of Hawai'i Kai) was named to the Atlantic Ten Conference All-Rookie Team. Higa scored two goals and played in all 19 games, starting 16.



Football

• Brigham Young junior safety Aaron Francisco (Kahuku '01 of La'ie) was named to the Mountain West Conference first team.

Francisco, who was an honorable mention selection last season, ranked third in the MWC with a career-high 116 tackles, including 53 solo tackles and seven tackles for losses. He led the Cougars with three interceptions and also had three pass deflections, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Francisco was also selected to the CollegeFootballnews.com All-Mountain West first team, was named BYU's Player of the Year by the publication, and was 10th on its list of top 30 players regardless of position.

• Montana-Western junior cornerback Enoch McKeague (Saint Louis '01 of Kapa'a) was named to the Frontier Conference first team.

Sophomore center Abraham Apilado Jr. (Waimea '02 of Kekaha) was named to the second team.

McKeague had 33 tackles, including 19 solos, and three interceptions.

McKeague, a first-team selection as a defensive back and punt returner last season, was a co-captain this season.

Other Hawai'i players on the Montana-Western roster were: sophomore cornerback Chad Adviento (Saint Louis '02 of Waimanalo), freshman wide receiver Akamu Aki (Baldwin '03 of Wailuku), freshman wide receiver Keahua Bowman (Saint Louis '02 of Waimanalo), freshman linebacker/defensive end Prince Brown (Saint Louis '02 of Kapolei), sophomore linebacker Kawai Curnan (Saint Louis '02 of Kealia), freshman safety/kick return specialist Joshua Gora-Aina (Saint Louis '02 of Wai'anae), senior linebacker Kamakani Rowland (Baldwin '95 of Waiehu) and sophomore defensive tackle Kama McKeague (Saint Louis '02 of Kapa'a).

Tommy Lee, who coached at Saint Louis School in 1971, is Montana-Western's head coach.

• Northwest Missouri State senior offensive lineman Raymond Fonoti ('Aiea '98 of Honolulu) earned honorable mention Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics honors.

Junior linebacker Richard Fonoti of Honolulu is also on the team.

• Occidental sophomore linebacker Derek Turbin (Punahou '02 of Honolulu) was an all-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honorable mention selection.

• Mesa College sophomore offensive lineman Kealaka'i Toledo (Damien '02 of Honolulu), freshman wide receiver Jacob Cadenlina (Leilehua of Honolulu), freshman inside linebacker Daniel Chavez (Damien of Kane'ohe) and freshman defensive tackle Kainoa Yoshida (Kamehameha of Honolulu) helped lead the Mavericks to a 10-2 record and an 8-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference mark.

Mesa College lost to Central Oklahoma, 20-15, on Nov. 22 in the NCAA Division II playoffs.



Women's Volleyball

• Santa Barbara City College libero Kalei Lau (Hilo '02) was selected to the Western State Conference first team.

Lau was also given the coaches award, which is "awarded by the coaching staff to the member of the team that displays all the characteristics of a team player."

Coach Ed Gover said Lau "is not only respected for her leadership by the coaching staff but also her teammates. Kalei is all of this and more."



Women's Soccer

• Princeton sophomore defender Romy Trigg-Smith (Punahou '02 of Kailua) has been named an Academic All-Ivy League selection.

Trigg-Smith started all 17 games for the Tigers.
