Maui charity profiled

A Maui holiday charity project spearheaded by a guy who won't take "no" for an answer will be among six stories told in a Food Network special, "Christmas in America," airing at 8 p.m. Sunday (repeats Dec. 20, 21, 23, 25, check listings).

Nine years ago, Wailea resident Bob Douglas dug into his own pocket to help a needy family get a tree and Christmas dinner. His Christmas Cheer Project has since expanded to serve more than 85 families annually on Maui and Moloka'i. Information: Bob Douglas, (808) 875-1241 or write xmascheer@hawaii.rr.com.

Local books, low prices

The Hawaiian Historical Society's annual open house and book sale is a chance to meet writers of Island history and buy books from local publishers at discounted prices. It's also a chance to do a little after-hours shopping at the Mission Houses Museum Shop, a charming spot for well-selected, often locally handcrafted, gift items. The sale is from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. tonight in the society's library and reading room tucked behind the Mission Houses Museum at 560 Kawaiaha'o in Honolulu. You can also sign up for historical society membership ($20-$50), which entitles you to receive the Hawaiian Journal of History.
