Air show among events to mark Wrights' flight

The city and state will present events this weekend in Leeward O'ahu honoring the 100th anniversary of the Wright brothers' first flight in December 1903.

The state's "Hawai'i Aviation Celebration," will kick off tomorrow and run through Sunday at Kalaeloa Airport, formerly known as Barbers Point. Gates open at 10 a.m. each day.

The highlight of the free event will be a two-hour air show beginning at 2 p.m. both days.

Also featured will be nearly five dozen military and commercial aircraft and 40 informational exhibits as well as food, rides and entertainment.

In conjunction with the state event, the city will commemorate a century of powered flight with the Sprint Hawai'i Sunset on The "Planes," starting at 11 a.m. both days at the Kapolei Fairgrounds. In addition to continuous entertainment, food and crafts, the festival will present the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean" tomorrow, and "Bruce Almighty" on Sunday. Both films will begin at sundown.

Also tomorrow, NASA astronaut Carlos Noriega will be grand marshal for the Kapolei community's annual Kapolei Lighted Christmas Parade, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Kapolei Satellite City Hall and ending at the Kapolei Fairgrounds.

Parking for the events will be available at the Kapolei Fairgrounds, Kapolei High School and Kalaeloa Airport.

In addition, free shuttle service will be provided to carry people from event to event.
