Smith-Beretania Park is a community win
In many ways, it is completely appropriate that residents of the Downtown/Chinatown area are putting together their own celebration of the opening of the Smith-Beretania Park.
That's because the park is a tribute to grassroots neighborhood activism that has been sustained for two decades.
This was not a park handed to the community by the city. It was a park the community had to fight for time and time again.
Some members of the community are miffed that the city didn't put on a full-scale dedication ceremony when the park quietly opened a few weeks ago.
Now, city officials say there may be some kind of ceremony at the park in conjunction with Chinese new year's in January. That's fine. But a big City Hall extravaganza is hardly needed.
This is ultimately a community triumph and it is the community's job to celebrate its own achievement.
