BOOKMARK
Hawai'i sports book features photos, facts, figures

"The Great Hawai'i Sports Journal: A Photo Essay" by Kirk Lee Aeder, text by Kalani Simpson; Island Heritage, hardback, $18.99

This book will make a great holiday gift for any sports-crazed Islander and is suitable for any age from middle-school up. The coffee table-size collection of photos and short essays offers some history but is primarily a breezy look at modern-day Hawai'i sports.

The book is divided into chapter groups: Hawaiian sports (canoeing, paddling, cliff-diving); Games People Play (golf, pro football, baseball, college all-stars); Setting Solo Records (sumo, boxing, swimming); Return to the Sea (sailing, fishing, windsurfing); Pushing the Limit (Ironman, marathon, Jaws) and a brief Photo Gallery of shots that apparently didn't fit anywhere else. There's an emphasis on edgy sports and personalities.

The design is a little cluttered and makes use of a few too many tricks, but sports fans likely will notice only the photos, facts and figures and enjoy reading the essays and no doubt debating over what made it into the book and what was left out.
