Sewage spills into pond
Advertiser Staff
An estimated 65,000 gallons of untreated sewage discharged into the upper Kuapa Pond in Hawai'i Kai yesterday at 9:40 a.m., according to Hawai'i American Water, a privately owned wastewater facility serving 10,000 households in the community.
The spill was caused by a valve failure at one of the company's pump stations. The problem has been fixed, and water samples have been taken for testing. Residents upstream of the Wailua Bridge were advised to avoid contact with the water until results were in and residents notified.
Boating activities are not restricted, the company said.
