Nine boxers advance to U.S. Championships

Adam Rodrigues of the Kaka'ako Boxing Club upset Under-19 national champion Kini Sofa Jr. in the 119-pound final of the USA-Boxing Hawai'i's State/Regional Championship Olympic Qualifier at Waimanalo Recreation Center on Friday night.

Rodrigues, a Pearl City High student, won when the referee stopped the contest after three standing-8 counts.

Nine winners at the qualifier, including Rodrigues, will compete in the U.S. Championships at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., Jan. 10-18.

Other winners were Richard Pelen Jr. (125 pounds, Wai'anae Boxing Club), Enriquez Tangaro (132, Wai'anae), Jeffrey Pelen Jr. (141, unattached), Brent Rodrigues (152, Palolo), Zachery Ilarraza (165, Wailuku), Christopher Downs (178, Palolo), Ryan Bolen (201, Kaka'ako) and Tinei Su'a (201-plus, Kaka'ako).

Jeffrey Pelen was named the Hawai'i tournament's outstanding boxer.

MEETING

• Quarterback Club: The club's Legends of the Game in Hawai'i Sports History series continues tomorrow with Joe Francis, Rockne Freitas and Skippa Diaz.

The club's luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. at Pagoda Ballroom.

Francis and Freitas are ex-NFL players and Diaz is a former football head coach at Farrington High.


BASKETBALL

BYUH wins: Jake Chrisman scored 25 points and Austin Smylie had 10 points and 10 rebounds as Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Notre Dame de Namur (Calif.), 68-52, last night at the Cannon Activities Center.

Chrisman made 10 of 15 field-goal attempts and 5 of 6 free-throw attempts.
