The man was booked on suspicion of first-degree computer fraud, first-degree theft, three counts of third-degree identity theft and first-degree unauthorized computer access.
Lt. Pat Tomasu, supervisor of Honolulu police financial fraud investigations, said the arrest capped a nine-month investigation.
The man’s employer called police in March after a credit card in the name of a customer was mailed to the company, said Tomasu. "One slipped through, and it turned out to be a break," the lieutenant said.
The investigation determined the employee had intercepted at least 17 other credit cards mailed to the business address, added Tomasu.
None of the cards was used, said Tomasu, but credit-line amounts established, the alleged theft of customer information, and use of a computer for purpose of illegal financial gain are criteria police are looking at for indictment.
