ADVERTISER CHRISTMAS FUND
Walkers, back rests could help others

By Rod Ohira

"M.E." has literally lived his life one step at a time.

Born prematurely, he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth. At age 26, he's overcome many physical and emotional challenges with the support of family and friends.

"I'm proud that I graduated from high school and that I have a job," said M.E., who works 19 hours a week mentoring others with developmental disabilities. "I get a lot of encouragement and feel thankful for what I have. In my job, I try to encourage people to speak out for what they want and need."

Strengthening his legs has been a lifelong task. Today, M.E. uses a walker with two wheels to get around on his own.

"My legs still tighten up," said M.E., who can walk for five to 10 minutes at a time with the walker. "I want to be able to walk for a longer distance."

M.E., who uses a mobile wheelchair at home, is saving to buy a back rest that would help him sit up straight. "When I'm sitting, I tend to lean to one side," he said.

Rather than a gift for himself, M.E. would like walkers and back rests for others. "A lot of people out there are more in need than I am," M.E. said.

Our anonymous Santa has generously offered once again this year to match the first $25 of each donation to the Christmas Fund. Checks made payable to "The Advertiser Christmas Fund" should be mailed to Helping Hands Hawai'i, P.O. Box 17780, Honolulu, HI 96817.

Monetary donations may be dropped off at any First Hawaiian Bank branch. Anyone wishing to donate goods instead of money can do so at the Community Clearinghouse at 2100 N. Nimitz Highway, near Pu'uhale Road. For details, call 440-3804.
