THE LEFT LANE
Tales of the dog

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Ever wonder where the phrase "man's best friend" came from?

The Hallmark book "I'll Be Doggone" says the phrase "man's best friend" comes from an elegant 1870 speech by country lawyer George Vess, representing Charles Burden's dog, Old Drum, that had been shot to death. The accused was found guilty by a teary-eyed jury brought to its collective knees and thus awarding a judgment of $550 in damages instead of the $150 that had been asked for.

The hot dog got its name one day at New York's Polo Grounds when a New York sports cartoonist overheard a vendor yelling, "Get your red hot dachshund dogs" referring, of course, to the shape of the sausage. After drawing his cartoon, he realized he couldn't spell dachshund, so he just left the word out of the caption, and presto, hot dogs were born!

Calendar done locally

With the new year a few weeks away, here's a push for the 2004 Pualani Hawaii Swimwear calendar. Call it an all-local production: The suits are created by local designer Iwalani Isbell, who used "real" women (and girls) of Hawai'i as models. The calendar was shot by local photographer Christiaan Phleger and produced in Hawai'i.

The calendars highlight Hawai'i's active lifestyle and the beauty of the beach. They're available at New Moon (at Discovery Bay, 1778 Ala Moana, 955-5099) for $9.95, or free with a purchase of $50 or more.
