Ask to attend 'Producers' relaunch in NYC

"PETER" PRINCIPAL: Randl Ask, one of the principals (playing Captain Hook) in Diamond Head Theatre's "Peter Pan" musical, has a New Year's Eve treat awaiting him as soon as the show closes here Dec. 28. He'll fly to New York as a guest of show-biz pals Sarah Jessica Parker ("Sex and the City") and her husband, Matthew Broderick, to attend the New Year's Eve relaunching performance of "The Producers," the Tony Award-winning hit. Broderick and Nathan Lane, who created the musical roles, are returning to the cast, giving it a boost. Ask previously appeared with Parker and Broderick in the last revival of "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" on the Great White Way. In that show, Ask understudied Broderick's J. Pierrepont Finch character. ...

ITEMIZATIONS: Mel Cabang brought his comedy show to the Las Vegas Club last month, and pal Pat Morita stopped in, took the stage and did a few bits. Cabang will take over the 10:30 p.m. Saturday slot at Brew Moon at Ward Centre starting Dec. 27. ...

Speaking of Morita: He's part of "Volcano High," a martial-arts film that airs Sunday on MTV, with a diverse cast of hip-hop, film and TV personalities, including OutKast's Andre 3000, Big Boi, Snoop Dogg, Mya, Lil' John, Tracy Morgan and Method Man. Morita, best known as Mr. Miyagi from "The Karate Kid" trilogy, plays a vice principal in this venture. ...

Alan Rakov, marketing director of the Honolulu Symphony, will move to Los Angeles with his wife, Billi, before Christmas. He will become director of strategic marketing for Ticketmaster at its Sunset Boulevard corporate headquarters. Besides a hole-in-one at Ala Wai Golf Course, highlights of his two years here also include joining the orchestra as a second-section violinist at last year's Beethoven's Ninth. ...

Hey, Ed Kenney: Give us a call. Theater Under the Stars in Houston is reviving "Flower Drum Song" in March (the show then goes on national tour) and wants to invite you the opening night. Bob Dowdall, who was in a Blaisdell Concert Hall production with Kenney, now lives in Houston and met up with Georgia Engel, former Islander who was doing "Nunsense" with Kaye Ballard, Lee Merriweather and Mimi Hines. Talk centered around Hawai'i and eventually Kenney, who was in the original Broadway production of the Rodgers & Hammerstein classic. ...

THE LOCAL ANGLE: When Britney Spears was here soaking up the sun Thanksgiving week, she was part of an entourage of eight — along with her brother, Bryan — who dined at the Four Seasons Resort's Beach Tree Restaurant on the Big Island. According to People magazine, the pop songstress couldn't resist the mike and did an impromptu version of "Something to Talk About," the Bonnie Raitt hit, with the Beach Tree Boys providing the back-up. Something to write home about for those in the dining room. ...

Kirk Torigoe, one-time member of the Show Kidz group here, has landed a role in the upcoming Broadway musical "Bombay Dreams," which is based on an idea by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Shekhar Kapur. It's Bollywood meets Broadway — and a keen opportunity for a local to shine. ...

And Mahi Kekumu, who also is known as Mahi'ai, has been understudying the role of Mereb in "Aida" since Jan. 9, and finally got to play it in a recent matinee. He played the King in an earlier Ron Bright-directed "The King and I" at Castle High. Las Vegas regulars may know him as the former dance captain for a Chippendale's revue. ...
