School meets 'No Child' goals
The state Department of Education announced yesterday that Iroquois Point Elementary School made adequate yearly progress last school year under the federal No Child Left Behind law.
The school had appealed an earlier determination by the DOE that it did not make its goals under the law, which requires that schools make annual steps toward student proficiency in core subjects by 2014.
Fourteen schools have now successfully appealed to the DOE since initial school results were released in September. Overall, 168 schools or 60 percent did not meet goals under the law last school year.

Makiki sexual attack reported
A 38-year-old woman told police she was robbed and sexually attacked by a gunman who confronted her between 5:30 and 6 p.m. Friday in the elevator of her Wilder Street apartment building. No arrests have been made.

Homicide probe begins on Maui
WAILUKU, Maui Police opened a homicide investigation yesterday after finding the body of a middle-aged man in his carport in Ha'iku.
The discovery was made after police officers responded to a 10:23 a.m. call regarding males fighting at an Akahai Place residence, said Lt. Glenn Cuomo of the Maui Police Department Criminal Investigation Division.
Investigators were still at the scene late yesterday, Cuomo said. No further information was available.
Moped rider dies after crash
HILO, Hawai'i A 59-year-old Puna man died after his moped collided Saturday night with a sport utility vehicle in the Eden Roc Estates subdivision in Mountain View.
Michael R. Spens, of Mountain View, was riding his moped east on Palainui Street shortly before 7:20 p.m. when he collided head-on with a westbound SUV driven by Rae Fonseca, 50, also of Mountain View. Spens was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:27 p.m. Sunday.
Police are investigating and have ordered an autopsy. Anyone with information about the collision is asked to call Officer Norbert Serrao at 961-2332 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.
New fire chief starts job today
LIHU'E, Kaua'i Dennis Furushima, a 29-year veteran of the Kaua'i Fire Department who retired in 2002, will take over as chief today. Furushima had served as the department's training officer and was captain of the Kalaheo Fire Station before retiring. He was appointed by Mayor Bryan Baptiste.
