The win advances the Raiders (8-0) into tonight's quarterfinals, where they will face Montrose Christian (Rockville, Md.), ranked No. 7 in the nation by USA Today.
Hamilton (2-5) is nowhere near the national rankings, but the Huskies did upset one of Arizona's top teams, Desert Vista (Phoenix), last Friday. Hamilton led Iolani for much of the first half last night and trailed only 36-34 at halftime after Low's two free throws with 20 seconds remaining.
But the Raiders stretched the lead to 50-41 late in the third period and Huskies guard Brian Schaeffer, who had 16 points in the first half, picked up his fourth foul with 1:03 remaining in that quarter.
"I knew he was the heart and soul of their team, so I tried to take it to him extra hard in the second half," said Low, who was guarded by Schaeffer. "We all just had to go harder in the second half."
Hamilton closed to 57-50 midway through the fourth period on Roy Prieto's 3-pointer, but Iolani then went on a 10-0 run sparked by Low's eight points to seal the victory.
"We got into a little foul trouble, and that's when big-time players take over," Huskies coach Kevin Hartwig said. "Derrick showed why he's such a quality player, and No. 30 (Kyle Pape) also shot the ball well. That, plus their team's defensive intensity hurt us. They are just relentless, and I think our guys got a little rattled."
Raiders coach Mark Mugiishi said this year's Iolani team relies on a full-court, fast-paced game that can allow opponents to match them basket-for-basket early on.
"A lot of our games have been like that; Kalaheo was up by two on us in the first half (at the St. Joseph tournament last weekend)," Mugiishi said. "But we have a lot of depth, and as the game goes on it kind of wears on the other team."
Schaeffer finished with 18 points to lead Hamilton. Pape and Ryan Hirata each scored 12 points for the Raiders.
"Iolani's a quality team," Hartwig said. "Desert Vista is bigger, but I think Iolani has a lot more weapons and they shoot better. They've got four or five guys who can flat-out shoot, and they're a quality team because they're so versatile. They definitely could do battle in Arizona."
Montrose Christian (Rockville, Md.) 77, Moanalua 30: Tunji Sorye scored 18 points and K.J. Matsui 16 to lead the Mustangs past the Menehunes.
Joe Nishimura led Moanalua with 13 points.
Fairley (Memphis, Tenn.) 75, Kalani 44: Reginald Owens scored 13 points and Mario Evans 11 to lead the Bulldogs past the Falcons.
Carsen Chun and Mark Bonner each had 12 points to lead Kalani.
Mount Vernon (N.Y.) 103, Mid-Pacific 48: Michael Coburn scored 16 points and Keith Benjamin 15 to lead the Knights past the Owls.
Chris Perry led MPI with 11 points.
