Pearl City's Cabanero, Mililani's Mabry, Millwood take top honors

By Stacy Kaneshiro
Advertiser Staff Writer

Pearl City's Jensen Cabanero and Mililani's Mikhail Mabry were instrumental in getting their teams to the O'ahu Interscholastic Association playoffs this past season. Their performances have been rewarded, as they were picked as the OIA West's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively.

Pearl City quarterback Jensen Cabanero, top, was named the OIA West's Offensive Player of the Year, while Mililani linebacker Mikhail Mabry, above, was chosen Defensive Player of the Year.

Mililani's James Millwood was selected as the Coach of the Year.

The OIA West's coaches selected the all-stars.

Mabry, a 6-foot-2, 225-pound senior, played linebacker for a defense that allowed the fewest points in the West. He also was like a coach on the field, as he was given the responsibility to call plays on the field.

"He's a very smart, instinctive player," Millwood said. "He's always around the football."

Meanwhile, Cabanero, a 6-1, 190-pound senior quarterback, was vital in the Chargers' offensive attack. He led the West in passing by completing 94 of 172 for 1,302 yards and 20 touchdowns.

"He dedicated himself to the game," Pearl City coach Onosai Tanuvasa said. "He goes that extra mile to be good."

Cabanero helped guide the Chargers to a 6-3 overall record, the school's best since 1986, when Pearl City went 8-2.

The Western Division champion Trojans landed seven players on the first team. Joining Mabry are defensive back Aaron Pooloa; defensive lineman Jake Ingram; running back Peter Raneses; and offensive linemen Sene Ma'afala and Micah Kia; and kicker Darren Smith.

The Chargers, who finished second in the West, had two others joining Cabanero on the first team in linebacker Preston Chestnutt and Nathaniel Nasca, who was picked at wide receiver and defensive back.

Leilehua also had three players representing four positions. Lineman Pio Malagaoma was selected on offense and defense. The other Mules picked were defensive back Blake Furtado and linebacker B. J. Fruean.

The two Leeward Coast teams had three selections each. Nanakuli had defensive back Jimmy Afamasaga, defensive lineman Rolando Celes and special teams player Kyle Beck, while Wai'anae had running back Chris Lave, tight end James Robinson and offensive lineman Chris Medeiros.

Campbell is represented by receiver Isaac Laupola and defensive lineman David Veikune.

Offensive lineman Maifala La'a was selected from Waipahu.

Millwood guided the Trojans to their first Western Division title and first undefeated team through regular season play. The team's 9-3 overall record is only the second time the Trojans have reached nine wins in their 29-year history. This was Millwood's 10th season as coach at Mililani.
