Fresno State's Lane on fast track in WAC basketball

Fresno State women's basketball player Aritta Lane was named the Western Athletic Conference's Player of the Week for Dec. 8 to 14.

It is the first honor for the junior forward, who leads the WAC with 18.6 points per game.

Lane, a 2001 graduate of 'Aiea High, scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the Bulldog's

71-61 win over Santa Clara on Dec. 13.

Football

• Washington redshirt freshman Donny Mateaki (Iolani '02 of Ho-nolulu) was named to the Sporting News Freshman All-America second team.

He also was named to the Freshman All-Pacific 10 Conference first team by the publication.

Mateaki started four games for the Huskies, totalling 12 tackles, including two sacks.

• Oklahoma State junior punter Cole "Kaho'okele" Farden has ties to Hawai'i. His father, Keahi Robins, is from Honolulu, and Farden is one-eighth Hawaiian.

He averages 43.5 yards per punt, with a long of 80 yards.

Oklahoma State (9-3) finished the regular season ranked No. 21 in the AP Top 25 Poll and plays Mississippi (9-3) Jan. 2 in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.

Men's Soccer

Penn State junior defender Kenji Treschuk (Moanalua '00 of Honolulu) was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District II second team.

Treschuk has a 3.30 grade point average in psychology. This year he set career highs in goals (4) and points (9).



Women's Volleyball

Loyola Marymount senior outside hitter Kealani Kimball (Kamehameha '00 of Kaunakakai, Moloka'i) was named to the West Coast Conference All-Academic team.

She was one of 12 conference volleyball players to earn the honor. She earned all-WCC first-team honors for the third season in a row last month.

Kimball, the Lions' co-captain, has a 3.32 cumulative grade point average in business administration.



Women's Swimming

Tulane freshman Leslie Christian (Leilehua '03 of Wahiawa) set a meet record in the 1650-yard freestyle in the Giant Eagle Zips Invitational on Dec. 6.

Her season-best of 17 minutes, 20.4 seconds beat the previous record of 17:34.25 by Katie Upquart of St. Bonaventure.



Men's Water Polo

Yale senior goalie Andrew Bassford (Punahou '00 of Honolulu) led his club team to a 14-1 record and third-place finish in the National Collegiate Club Championship in College Station, Texas, last month.

Bassford, a co-captain, was named to the New England Division first team, averaging 15 saves a game. He was the league's MVP last season.

Yale ended the year No. 3 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Men's Collegiate Club Top 20 Poll.
