THE LEFT LANE
Hot date, please

Advertiser Staff

Single women are asking Santa to bring them Mr. Right this year, while single men are just hoping for a hot date, according to a 2003 holiday survey of more than 1,000 singles nationwide by Yahoo! Personals. Among the findings:

• While 86 percent of singles are willing to go to a holiday party alone, nearly half (43 percent) said it's sad to be single during the holidays.

• All many single women want for Christmas is Mr. Right, according to results for 40 percent of single women who responded to the survey, while 38 percent of single men said they were just hoping to get a hot date for New Year's Eve.

• Nearly half of respondents (46 percent) said their New Year's resolution for 2004 is to meet new people and go on more dates in hopes of meeting that special someone. That ranked higher than losing weight, quitting smoking, saving money and exercising.

"The Nutcracker" is an enduring holiday treat. But while the music remains unchanged, costumes and sets tend to get a bit tatty after a while. This year, Ballet Hawaii, which presents the state's most elaborate production of the familiar favorite, invested in a $100,000 set redesign. The set by designer Peter Dean Beck will debut in performances tomorrow through Dec. 21 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall.

The company is fund-raising to pay off the last $20,000. If you'd like to help, send a contribution earmarked "Set Campaign" to P.O. Box 61940, Honolulu, HI 96839, or donate by credit card at Ballet Hawaii: 521-8600.
