For the second straight day, Hawai'i came agonizingly close to making waves on the national high school boys basketball scene.

Kalaheo took Florida's No. 1-ranked team, Dr. Phillips (Orlando), to double overtime yesterday in their Iolani Prep Classic opener before falling, 64-61. On Tuesday, Iolani lost a 42-41 overtime heart-breaker to USA Today's No. 7-ranked team, Montrose Christian (Rockville, Md.).

Kalaheo senior center Sam Wilhoite scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to help the Mustangs (7-2) push the Panthers (5-0) to the brink, but Dr. Phillips' Trey Hopkins drained a 3-pointer with 2:50 remaining in the second overtime and added a layup 25 seconds later to put the Panthers up 64-59.

Matt Nakashima sank two free throws with 24 seconds left to pull Kalaheo to 64-61, but his off-balanced 25-footer as time expired bounced off the back rim.

On Dec. 1, Dr. Phillips scored an 80-66 victory over Edgewater (Orlando), then ranked No. 9 in the nation by USA Today.

"Kalaheo is a very, very good team," Dr. Phillips coach Anthony Long said. "Wilhoite obviously is a great player, but they've got some other shooters, too. They're solid."

The Mustangs showed early that they could compete, jumping to an 11-2 lead in the opening minutes. The Panthers rallied to take an 18-17 lead in the second period, and the teams traded baskets for the rest of the half, with Kalaheo leading 28-27 at intermission.

The Mustangs opened the lead to 43-36 in the third quarter, but Dr. Phillips caught them again and took a 52-49 lead on Erick Green's layup with 1:12 remaining in regulation. But Kalaheo's William Elliott swished a 23-footer with five seconds left to send it into overtime.

Theo Fujita's layup with 40 seconds remaining in the first OT gave the Mustangs a 59-57 lead, but the Panthers' Jason Rich tied it again on a putback 15 seconds later.

Rich, a 6-foot-3 guard who has signed with Florida State, led all scorers with 28 points.

Fujita added 14 points for Kalaheo and Nakashima chipped in with 10 points.

"I'm real proud of my teammates," Wilhoite said. "I think we took a big step tonight."
