THE LEFT LANE
Multiculti Christmas

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Putumayo, a world music purveyor, has released "Christmas Around the World," an international feast for the ears. The label puts an ethnic spin on familiar and new holiday tunes, including a Cuban rendition by Ramon F. Veloz on "Paz en la Tierra," which we know as "Joy to the World."

Check local shops, or visit www.putumayo.com. Some sales proceeds go to Putumayo Cross-cultural Initiative, which uses world music, experimental learning and the arts to inspire children and families to connect with various cultures.

HIFF's Oscar bash

Oscar and the Hawaii International Film Festival have become friends and will again hold hands when the festival presents — with the blessing of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences — the annual Oscar Night America party Feb. 29 at The Royal Hawaiian hotel's Monarch Room.

The Oscar Night event is a HIFF fund-raising party. Participants receive the actual program distributed at the ceremony in Los Angeles and watch a live feed of the show. Oscar will be marking its 76th anniversary.

Chuck Boller was a guest at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival last week.

He said ticket prices and other particulars will be posted on the festival's Web site, www.hiff.org.

Change the date

Last Saturday's Faith page mixed up a few dates. These events are tomorrow:

  • At Central Union Church, the live nativity will be 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Also, a Morning of Centering Prayer will be 9 to 11:30 a.m. in the Fireside Room.
  • Christmas Festival of Music will be at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church Windward.
  • The annual Christmas Concert by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be at 7 p.m. at the Honolulu Tabernacle.
